-ried out (vide C.S.0.8431/1895). The question as to the ad-
visability of carrying out this portion of the schere had arisen in consequence of opposition on the part of the lot-
holders affected by it, who declined to assent to it and, though several of they gave their assent after it had been finally decided to proceed with the work, cllers did not do so,
with the result that certain portions of the reclamation were carried out at the expense of the Government and became its property on completion. Basing an estimate upon the recent sale of part of this land, the gain to Government, after de- ducting the actual cost of reclaiming the area which fell into its hands and the compensation paid to the dissenting lot-
holders will be as follows:-
Sale of land which has become the property of the Government, Square Fest £4,950 at $8.78, say.
Deduct cost of reclsiring land,
Square set 24,950 at $2.17, say, $54,200
Deduct amount paid as compensa-
tion to dissenting lotiorders, say, 44,500
$219,000
Net gain to Government.
98,700
.$120,300.
In addition to the above, an annual
return of $1,100 will in future be received in the shape of Crown Rent from the portion of reclamation referred to.
